This is the spectacular moment the iconic Rockefeller Centre Christmas tree lights were turned on in New York.

Footage shows the excited crowd counting down before the 75ft ornament was illuminated on December 4, marking the official start of the holiday season in Midtown Manhattan.

The Norwegian spruce, adorned with 50,000 twinkling LED lights, is crowned by a 900-pound Swarovski crystal star.

Thousands attended the ceremony, with the gigantic tree - harvested from upstate New York and weighing 11 tonnes - standing as the centerpiece of the annual celebration.

Clear skies allowed the event to unfold without weather interruptions.
