SOPHIA CATHEDRAL AT SOFIYIVSKA SQUARE, SOME TAKING PHOTOS KYIV, UKRAINE - DEC. 5: As the festive season approaches, preparations for Christmas and New Year have commenced in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, continuing a tradition under the ongoing shadow of war.

A Christmas tree was ceremoniously installed last week in the city's central Sofiyivska Square, drawing the attention of local residents.

This year's tree stands 16 meters (approximately 52 feet) tall. Its decorative theme is inspired by the pastel shades found in the historic frescoes of the nearby St. Sophia Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

According to the project's creator, Nadiya Tutenko, the decoration involve around 4,500 individual ornaments. A soft, warm garland was also be used to illuminate the tree, aiming to create a cozy atmosphere for citizens.
