Man fascinated by army of ants carrying leaves marching down pavement
On December 4, 2025, Mr. Liang Ruiwen, working in Managua, Nicaragua, captured the interesting scene of leafcutter ants carrying leaves in a large group.
The video shows them marching in a mighty and orderly manner, like a legion from a fairy tale world.
Mr. Liang exclaimed that this was the first time he had seen such a scene in reality and felt that the world of small animals was so lovely.
Leafcutter ants carry leaves in groups mainly to cultivate fungi. They cut the leaves and bring them back to their nests, where they chew and decompose the leaves to provide a substrate for the fungi to grow. These fungi are the main food source for the leafcutter ants.
Carrying leaves in groups can improve efficiency, ensure a continuous supply of fungi inside the nest, and thus maintain the survival and reproduction of the entire colony.
