Storyline: Unmanned delivery vehicles gaining traction in China [Voice_over] In China, unmanned vehicles are extending their reach to a growing number of delivery application scenarios. At a condiment market in east China's Qingdao City, a vendor uses a smartphone app to summon driverless vans for instant deliveries. These unmanned vehicles, with a payload capacity of one ton, were green lit to hit the roads in August. Vendors say the service helps out a lot. [Sound_bite] Li Haiping, Vendor, condiment market in Qingdao City: "It's very convenient. Everything is done through a smartphone. We use these driverless vehicles at least five times a day. They're affordably priced. A short trip runs about 8 to 10 yuan, while longer deliveries typically cost between 10 and 20 yuan." [Voice_over] According to the State Post Bureau, by the end of last year, over 6,000 unmanned delivery vehicles had entered large-scale commercial operations, delivering hundreds of millions of orders across more than 100 specialized scenarios. Major logistics firms, meanwhile, are upping their ante on unmanned delivery vehicles to tap into the huge market potential. [Sound_bite] Qiao Jie, Operations planning director, SF Express Beijing: "Compared to traditional truck delivery, unmanned vehicles not only improve delivery efficiency by approximately 15 percent but also reduce last-mile costs by around 10 percent for enterprises. This year, our investment in unmanned delivery vehicles has increased by over 300 percent year on year, and we plan to further expand procurement next year while exploring additional application scenarios." [Voice_over] By the middle of this year, over 100 Chinese cities had opened roads to unmanned delivery vehicles. [Restrictions: No access Chinese mainland]
