Australian tourist killed when he runs into restaurant glass door
An Australian tourist was killed when he crashed through the glass door of a restaurant in Thailand.
Donald James Varcoe was visibly distraught while sitting inside a Turkish restaurant on the holiday island of Phuket on December 11.
A waiter approached to take his order when the Aussie suddenly bolted from his seat, sparking alarm when he charged through the glass entrance.
CCTV footage shows him shattering the glass panels and roaring in pain as he fell onto the sharp shards. He was seen stumbling back into the restaurant before appearing to bang his head repeatedly on a table.
Terrified diners fled as Donald then rushed back outside and collapsed in a pool of blood.
Paramedics arrived at the Cappadocia restaurant at 10:30 pm local time, where they found blood smeared all over the patio, strewn with broken glass.
The tourist was lying on the ground with a severely injured right leg, where the glass was believed to have severed a vital blood vessel. He was rushed to Chalong Hospital but was pronounced dead from severe blood loss.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Ekkasak Kwanwan of the Karon Police Station said: 'The restaurant owner was contacted to file a police report to proceed with legal action.'
The once-pristine island of Phuket has been marred by over-tourism as the Thai government implements a visa-free scheme to boost revenue following the barren pandemic years.
The island saw 800,000 foreign visitors last year alone and it has become one of the most popular destinations in Thailand.
