1. ATENY WEK ATENY, SOUTH SUDAN MINISTER OF INFORMATION AND TECHNOLOGY SPEAKING AT PRESS CONFERENCE (English) JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN - DEC. 11: The South Sudanese government announced on Thursday, Dec. 11, that it has taken control of the disputed Heglig oil field following intense clashes between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In a press statement, South Sudan's Minister of Information and Technology, Ateny Wek Ateny, reported that the SAF's 90-22 Brigade carried out a "tactical retreat" from the conflict zone.
Ateny explained that the Sudanese troops withdrew via the Babonusa border town to the Panakuach area in South Sudan's Unity State due to heavy fighting in Heglig.
Upon crossing the border, the SAF units surrendered to the South Sudan People's Defense Forces (SSPDF) and handed over their infantry weapons.
Officials noted that tensions in the region remain high and they are monitoring developments closely.
