The Colosseum and Porta Metronia stations were inaugurated after years of construction delays, with the line originally launched in the early 2000s and partially opened in 2013.

The new stops, the first additions to Line C in seven years, also feature exhibition areas displaying archaeological finds from the Ancient Roman period uncovered during construction, creating a “museum-station” concept.

Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri said the main challenge was ensuring that engineering works could coexist with the city’s extraordinary archaeological heritage, adding that such major projects also help uncover layers of the past that might otherwise remain unknown
