UNCAPTIONED: Amazon Held Talks on $10 Billion Investment in OpenAI
Amazon Held Talks on $10 Billion Investment in OpenAI. Amazon was reported to be in talks to invest about $10 billion in OpenAI, in a potential deal valuing the AI firm at more than $500 billion. A source familiar with the discussions said negotiations were fluid and ongoing, highlighting growing competition to secure access to advanced artificial intelligence. The talks underscored the AI sector’s massive demand for computing power as companies raced to develop systems rivaling human intelligence. OpenAI had already signed multi-billion-dollar deals this year with firms including Nvidia and Oracle, and agreed to a $38 billion cloud services deal with Amazon in November. The discussions came as OpenAI laid the groundwork for a potential initial public offering that could value the company at up to $1 trillion. The move reflected OpenAI’s shift away from its non-profit roots after restructuring its partnership with Microsoft, which retained a 27% stake. Reports said OpenAI planned to use Amazon’s Trainium chips and could sell an enterprise version of ChatGPT to Amazon as part of a broader partnership. Neither Amazon, OpenAI nor Microsoft immediately commented, as investors closely watched whether heavy AI spending would continue to deliver returns.
