UK Government Will Not Financially Support Mossmorran. The UK government has confirmed it will not step in with financial support to keep the ExxonMobil plant at Mossmorran open. Speaking in the House of Commons, Business Minister Chris McDonald said there was simply no “realistic business plan” that could justify investment. He revealed that ExxonMobil’s chairman, Paul Greenwood, told him the plant had become inefficient and would require almost £1 billion in upgrades just to make it profitable again. The decision follows ExxonMobil’s announcement that the Fife Ethylene Plant will close in February, putting hundreds of jobs at risk. The company said the site no longer has a “competitive future” due to the UK’s current economic landscape, shifting policy environment and wider market pressures. For workers and the local community, the news marks the end of one of Scotland’s major petrochemical operations — and a difficult road ahead as the shutdown approaches.
