Various of icebreaker sailing Storyline China's 42nd Antarctic scientific expedition team completed the supply unloading from the research icebreakers Xuelong, or Snow Dragon, and Xuelong 2 at the Zhongshan Station on Sunday. Within two weeks, approximately 2,000 tons of supplies including experimental instrument and mechanical equipment were transfered from the two icebreakers to the Zhongshan Station, a Chinese scientific research base in Antarctica. Setting sail from Shanghai on Nov 1, the expedition team will conduct scientific drilling experiments in lakes deep in the Antarctic inland ice sheet. Using domestically built hot-water and thermal-melting drill systems, they will carry out clean drilling and sampling through ice more than 3,000 meters thick. To further advance understanding of Antarctica's role in global climate change, this expedition team will also collect long-term observational records in key regions such as the Amundsen Sea and Ross Sea. The expedition mission is expected to conclude in May 2026. [Restrictions: No access Chinese mainland]
