The aircraft, a Cessna 550, went down during its approach to Statesville Regional Airport. All seven people on board were killed, according to a statement from authorities.
Officials said a post-crash fire has delayed the release of a confirmed passenger list. However, authorities believe retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, his wife and their two children were among the victims.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the twin-engine jet crashed on the runway. Video footage from the scene showed heavy flames and thick black smoke rising from the wreckage.
