Sub-Zero Thrill: Kargil Youth Take to Snow-Covered Pitch, Play Cricket in Freezing Cold!
Despite bitter sub-zero temperatures and thick snow covering the ground, local youth in Kargil, Ladakh are defying the cold to play cricket on a snow-covered pitch, showcasing incredible enthusiasm and resilience. Temperatures in the region have dropped significantly following recent snow, with parts of Kargil recording as low as minus 3 °C after fresh snowfall blankets the town and surrounding areas
This spirited display comes amid winter’s increasing hold on the region, as Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh enter the harshest phase of winter — ‘Chillai Kalan’, marked by heavy snow and prolonged freezing conditions across the high-altitude terrain
Across Kashmir Valley, the first significant snowfall of the season has been reported in higher reaches such as Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and the Gurez and Warwan valleys, ending an unusually dry spell that had persisted for weeks. Snow also fell in parts of Anantnag and other valleys, bringing much-needed moisture and offering relief to residents.
While the snow has brought picturesque winter landscapes, it has also led to weather warnings and travel disruptions in some areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to heavy snowfall in higher terrain over the coming days, with rain in lower-lying plains.
In spite of these extreme conditions, cricket on snow reflects the undying spirit of local youth, who are making the most of winter’s beauty and challenges alike.
