China: Southwest China's Sichuan develops debut economy
Storyline Southwest China's Sichuan develops debut economy [Voice_over] Chengdu, the capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province famed for its pandas and fiery cuisine, is now working to develop its debut economy. Debut economy refers to economic activities in the city covering companies' new product releases, new business models or services, or when companies open their very first brick and mortar store. Centers like the Dongjiao Memory Cultural Park are filled with such businesses. Once an old factory, the park is now home to 90 brands' first stores- some of them flagships. [Sound_bite] Li Hairong, tourist: "I heard this is their first store in the world, so I'm here to check it out." [Sound_bite] Gan Junjie, tourist: "I kind of made a special trip to this store." [Voice_over] The park serves not only as a launchpad for new products, but also as a stage for global premieres. [Sound_bite] Zhou Chengjie, staff member, Dongjiao Memory: "The Arte Museum and the Three-Body Problem exhibition are both examples of our debut exhibitions. We also have music venues where many concerts are available." [Voice_over] Last year, the park attracted 17 million visitors and generated more than 400 million U.S. dollars in revenue. Official data from Sichuan's commerce department shows that in the first nine months of the year, over 700 brands opened their first stores in the province, with over 80 percent based in Chengdu.
