Homes damaged in Cambodian artillery attack on border village
Homes were destroyed as Cambodia fired artillery into border villages in Thailand.
Dozens of houses were blitzed in the 'indiscriminate' shelling of Thai frontier province Sa Kaeo on the evening of December 22.
Footage shows flames ravaging a residence in the Khok Sung district.
Police said Cambodian soldiers had fired some 200 BM-21 rockets from 'human shield' villages across the border, protecting them from retaliation from Thailand, which is bound by humanitarian laws through its US training and arms deals.
Police Colonel Sutthiphong Intasit, superintendent of Khok Sung Police Station, said five civilians and a police officer were injured, including one local who lost both legs.
Governor Parinya Photisat visited Khok Sung Hospital at 4:45 pm local time to check on the injured victims and coordinate assistance efforts.
Local authorities also carried out a damage assessment on houses affected by the explosions.
The First Army Area reported that the border clash had reached its 15th day, with fighting across three flashpoints at Ban Khlong Phaeng, Ban Nong Ya Kaew, and Ban Nong Chan villages on December 22.
Cambodia has reportedly strengthened its defensive positions and deployed artillery, mortars, small arms, and combat vehicles at all three locations.
Cambodian BM-21 rocket attacks since December 8 have reportedly injured seven civilians, killed seven cows, and damaged 14 houses in Khok Sung and Ta Phraya districts.
The strikes also affected 2,310 acres of sugarcane, 16.6 acres of eucalyptus and 3.6 acres of mango farms, and damaged 13 public facilities, including roads, high-voltage power poles and fences.
More than 120 rounds from BM-21 rocket launchers were fired at Ban Khlong Phaeng, while more than 60 rounds were fired at Ban Nong Ya Kaew, officials said.
The Royal Thai Air Force has responded by dispatching F-16 fighter jets to strike military targets near Ban Khlong Phaeng and opposite Ban Nong Chan.
The Thai and Cambodian militaries were set to meet on December 24 for peace talks after US President Donald Trump's bungled ceasefire attempt.
Territorial clashes flared up earlier this year before a brief ceasefire, but started again this month when Cambodian troops are said to have fired on a Thai engineering team building an access road in a disputed border area.
In the most recent battles, at least 23 Thai soldiers and one civilian have been killed.
In Cambodia, the number of military fatalities is believed to be much higher, though regime chiefs have not revealed the actual figure.
Around 600,000 people have been displaced on both sides of the border.
Cambodia's assault has largely been wayward, unguided rockets fired indiscriminately into Thai territory, including the July 24 attacks that killed 14 people and injured dozens more.
In response, Thailand has removed Cambodians from villages encroaching on its territory and used precision drone strikes and fighter jet strikes on military sites.
Former Khmer Rouge henchman and Cambodian dictator Hun Sen has repeatedly claimed that he wants peace and that Thailand is the aggressor.
Thai officials claim the ongoing border confrontations are a threat to national security, and the areas must be secured.
