Denmark Delivers Its Final Letter as Digital Shift Ends Postal Era. Denmark’s state-run postal service, PostNord, is set to deliver its final letter, ending more than 400 years of letter delivery. The move makes Denmark the first country in the world to decide that traditional letter mail is no longer essential or economically viable. Letter volumes in Denmark have fallen by more than 90% since 2000, reflecting the country’s rapid shift to digital communication. The former Central Post Building in Copenhagen, once a symbol of national connectivity, now operates as a luxury hotel. PostNord has removed around 1,500 public mailboxes, many of which were sold to citizens after drawing huge public interest. Letters will now be handled by private courier DAO via drop-off points in shops, while PostNord will continue to deliver parcels. Denmark’s highly digital public services mean most official and personal communication now arrives through electronic mailboxes. Advocacy groups warn that older people and those with limited digital access may be disproportionately affected by the end of letter delivery.
