Peruvian observatory tracks Sun’s impact on Earth
SHOTLIST:
LIMA, PERU (DEC. 30, 2025) (ANADOLU – ACCESS ALL)
1. VARIOUS DRONE SHOTS OF JICAMARCA OBSERVATORY RESEARCH AREA
2. IGP SIGN
3. VARIOUS OF ENGINEER EXPLAINING CODING, WORKING METHODS
4. VARIOUS OF DATA COLLECTION EFFORTS
5. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) DANNY SCIPION, DIRECTOR OF JICAMARCA RADIO OBSERVATORY SAYING:
"Observations at the observatory focus primarily on the equatorial ionosphere, examining both its general characteristics and its irregularities. While observation capacity was initially limited to approximately 1,000 hours per year, the acquisition of four new 96-kilowatt transmitters has enabled us to conduct continuous observations 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
We also measure critical conditions such as geomagnetic storms and coronal mass ejections. These constant measurements are essential for monitoring space weather across Peru and South America; this data is subsequently integrated into numerical models in coordination with other observatories worldwide." LIMA, PERU - DEC. 30, 2025: Geophysicists at the Jicamarca Radio Observatory in Lima, Peru are conducting critical ionospheric studies at one of the world’s premier equatorial research facilities to better understand threats to global infrastructure.
Operated by the Geophysical Institute of Peru, or IGP, the observatory’s strategic location on the equator allows scientists to analyze how solar flares disrupt GPS systems, satellite communications, and energy grids.
The facility is home to a massive 300-by-300-meter radar antenna capable of measuring changes in the ionosphere and neutral atmosphere with high precision.
Researchers said the Jicamarca observatory recently played a key role in analyzing three strong solar flares that could impact global navigation and communication systems, while efforts continue to further expand the center’s scientific capacity.
