Footage recorded from a seventh-floor apartment in central Mexico City shows high-rise buildings swaying noticeably as a 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck southern Mexico on January 2, 2026. The video, filmed by Bladimir, captures the tense moments as the city’s seismic alert system sounds, warning residents seconds before the strongest shaking reached the capital.

The earthquake was centered in Guerrero state, a region known for frequent seismic activity, and was felt across large parts of central and southern Mexico. Authorities confirmed two deaths in Guerrero and reported hundreds of aftershocks throughout the day following the main tremor.

In Mexico City, officials said the damage was largely non-structural, including cracked walls, fallen plaster, and scattered debris inside buildings. No major collapses were reported in the capital, though emergency services carried out inspections of offices, hotels, and residential towers as a precaution.
