A dramatic landslide struck the Uri area of Baramulla district on the Srinagar–Baramulla–Uri National Highway (NH-1) today, bringing traffic to a complete standstill. The incident occurred near the Eco Park stretch, where road widening work is underway — a factor that may have destabilised the slope.

Huge boulders, earth and debris tumbled down the mountainside, blocking the carriageway and forcing motorists to abandon their vehicles and flee for cover as massive rocks crashed onto the road. Viral footage shows motorists scrambling to safety as dust and rubble engulf the highway.

Traffic authorities immediately suspended movement in both directions for safety, leaving dozens of vehicles stranded on the crucial link connecting North Kashmir with the rest of the valley.

Officials say no casualties or serious injuries have been reported so far, but the debris continues to block the road. Heavy machinery and clearance teams have been deployed — however, work is temporarily paused until the slope stabilises to avoid further danger to rescue personnel.

Local traffic police have urged commuters to avoid the stretch and follow official advisories as efforts continue to restore connectivity on this vital highway.
