Woman wears different hat everyday for five years for charity
A woman has been fundraising by wearing a different hat everyday for five years - more than 1,827.
Hilary Fleming, 64, has raised over £5,500 for Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance - a charity that saved her husband's life twice after he fell off a ladder both times.
The retired NHS podiatrist from Swindon wears her unique hats whilst exercising - which she calls 'hat-ercise'.
So far she has worn a staggering 1,827 - and uses them to spark conversations to educate people on the life-saving work the air ambulance service provides.
Hilary said: "It really has gone by so quick! "
"Half a decade! It's mad - these hats really have taken me everywhere!"
"We have also raised over £5,500 for the incredible charity."
"I believe it costs them around £4,000 for one flight now - my husband had it twice so I really owe them a couple more grand!"
Any hats Hilary gets given or buys, she sells on for the charity at air ambulance events.
She added the experience has been 'wonderful and silly' - but she has achieved her mission of getting the name of the air ambulance service out into the public consciousness.
She said: "It's a bit of a silly thing to do but it has been fun and it has kept me fit!"
"I've enjoyed doing it - all it has been really is going out with a stupid hat on and getting people to notice so I can talk about the air ambulance."
"I can't imagine there is anyone else in the world who has done this - it certainly is a unique thing!"
Hilary has gone above and beyond for the service - which she notes is the phrase of Wiltshire and Bath air ambulance.
One of the things she has learnt during her fundraising is learning about other peoples' stories.
She explained: "Who ever would have thought we would need the service twice - I never thought about it before."
"We did a Christmas market recently and I was on the air ambulance stall - and this one man came up to me and said, 'thank you so much for saving me'."
"I didn't understand what he meant at first - and then he elaborated by saying the air ambulance had picked him up off a rugy pitch when he died."
"He said, 'here I am today - thank you for saving my life'."
"That's what I love about it. They just look like ordinary people - but you don't know peoples' stories."
Hilary will be visiting the charity's airbase to mark five years of her unique fundraiser on 8 January.
