Video shows the extensive damage caused to historic tidal island St Michael's Mount after Storm Goretti - with nearly 100 trees blown down.

The heavy storm brought chaos to Cornwall prompting a rare red weather warning for wind.

The rocky tidal island off the British coast with only 31 residents suffered a loss of "80 per cent" of its trees, said Darren Little, Head Gardener at St Michael's Mount."

Mr Little said with the strong winds coming through it caused "a lot of destruction" to all the northern woods and all the trees. "

The Met Office said Storm Goretti was one of the most severe wind events to hit Cornwall in recent years.

Mr Little said: "We've lost about 80 per cent of the trees on the island. "

"We've lost nearly 100 trees. "

"And underneath those trees, we got camellias, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, that have all been affected by this."

"Some of these trees are probably 80 to 100 years old as well. It devastated the whole area."

The island with a medieval church and castle, is home to a tiny living community and hundreds of thousands of visitors.

With the weather warning turning to red, residents and staff were told to evacuated the island.

He said: "We actually closed the island the day before the storm, and we put an announcement on social media that it will be closed because of the amber weather warning. "

"We didn't want to open up to the public and have public here."

"The weather warning was actually amber, at 8 o'clock in the morning and around 2.30pm, they put it to a red warning. "

"When it went to red warning, all staff, who were available, working on the island, left the island. "

"They all left and got home safely before the wind actually came in."

Mr Little said he and his team are clearing the route to the castle for their safety and have removed 15 trees this morning (9) to give access to the families' homes.

He added: "It's caused a lot of damage throughout all the northern woods and the dairy woods. "

"When it comes to buildings and the castle, everything's fine. The odd ridge tiles is missing, or the odd slate, but it's mainly the sort of structural to the woodland and the grass. "

He said that to repair the damage, clear the are and get it back it might that months of work.

"There's a lot of lot of trees, a lot of debris to move. "

"Being an island, so sort of isolated with restricted access as well to get machinery and to get diggers, JCBs will take time."

St Michael's Mount is jointly managed by the St Aubyn Estate and the National Trust.

It has been used as a film set for Game of Thrones's prequel House of the Dragon or the German TV adaptations of Rosamunde Pilcher's books.

The estate employs about 100 people and the oldest buildings on the island date back to the 12th century.
