“The training we have received—especially regarding safety—has taught us that no job is more important than a person’s life, or the life of a worker. When we work with this mindset and apply in the field the knowledge and training we have received, the job is actually not as frightening as it may seem.”

“Of course, the work becomes harder depending on the geographical conditions. It is especially more difficult in winter. Since we are mostly in the mountains, we face many hardships—snow, storms, rain. Still, there is a rewarding side to it. When we finally provide electricity and see how happy people are, we feel the same joy. We do this job with dedication and love.”

VAN PROVINCE, TÜRKİYE - RECENT JAN, 2026: Ilhan Abbasioglu, a 50-year-old electric technician with Van Lake Electricity Distribution Inc. (VEDAS), has dedicated three decades to restoring power in one of Türkiye's most challenging regions, where winter temperatures plunge to minus 25 degrees Celsius.

The father of three from Kalecik neighborhood in Tusba district began his career in 1996 after graduating from vocational high school. Working in the mountainous terrain of eastern Van province, Abbasioglu and his team regularly trek for kilometers through snow and blizzards, carrying heavy conductors and equipment on their backs to repair outages.

"The training we have received—especially regarding safety—has taught us that no job is more important than a person's life, or the life of a worker," Abbasioglu told Anadolu. "When we work with this mindset and apply in the field the knowledge and training we have received, the job is actually not as frightening as it may seem."

Despite the dangerous conditions, Abbasioglu said the satisfaction of restoring electricity to residents outweighs the hardships. "The happiness of bringing electricity to citizens makes us forget all the harsh conditions we face across those thirty districts," he said.

The team climbs approximately 300 poles annually while maintaining electrical infrastructure across the region's challenging geography. Abbasioglu emphasized that strict adherence to occupational safety protocols is essential, as workers are responsible not only for themselves but also for their colleagues.

Erhan Sami, who has worked alongside Abbasioglu for 16 years, described the rewarding nature of their work. "Of course, the work becomes harder depending on the geographical conditions. It is especially more difficult in winter," Sami said. "When we finally provide electricity and see how happy people are, we feel the same joy. We do this job with dedication and love."

The technicians continue their essential work ensuring uninterrupted power supply to communities across Van's remote districts, demonstrating resilience in the face of extreme weather conditions.
