According to a report by the Danish media outlet Berlingske, the mandate stems from a 1952 defense document adopted in the early years of the Cold War. The policy allows Danish forces to bypass a formal declaration of war if national territory is attacked, a measure designed to ensure the military is never "caught unprepared."

The document includes a specific clause regarding the chain of command, stating that Danish service members are not required to follow orders from "officials who have been captured or otherwise incapacitated by an enemy."

A day after the US military operation in Venezuela that captured President Nicolas Maduro on Jan. 3, Trump renewed his call for a takeover of Greenland in the interest of "national security."

“We need Greenland, from the standpoint of national security, and Denmark is not going to be able to do it,” he said.

Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and has repeatedly rejected proposals suggesting any transfer of sovereignty to the US.
