6. VARIOUS OF MEN FISHING ON SMALL BOAT DIYARBAKIR, TÜRKİYE - JAN. 8, 2026: As freezing temperatures descend upon southeastern Türkiye, the Devegecidi Dam Lake in the country's eastern Diyarbakir province has transformed into a stark landscape of floating ice and frost.

Despite the bitter cold, the rhythmic splash of oars continues as local fishermen navigate the partially frozen reservoir, maintaining a livelihood that rests on the thin edge of the winter season.

The lake, a vital ecosystem for migratory birds, turtles, and various fish species, has faced a challenging year. Extreme summer heat and the accelerating effects of global climate change have caused water levels to recede significantly. Now, the remaining waters are turning to ice.

To reach the unfrozen pockets where fish are still active, residents of nearby rural villages utilize small, traditional rafts known locally as "kelek." These modest vessels allow fishermen to weave through icy patches and cast their nets.
