SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES - JAN. 8: Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in downtown San Diego on Thursday evening, Jan, 8, January 8, to protest against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following the fatal shooting of a woman during an operation in Minneapolis the previous day.
The protesters initially assembled outside a federal building before marching through the city center. Participants carried placards, banners, and flags as they voiced their opposition to ICE operations. At one point, demonstrators briefly surrounded a U.S.
Border Patrol van before dispersing peacefully following intervention by San Diego Police Department officers.
The San Diego rally was part of broader protests spreading across the United States in response to the Minneapolis incident, which has drawn scrutiny from local officials and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The shooting occurred during an ICE operation in Minneapolis, where an agent fatally shot a woman identified as Good. U.S. President Donald Trump and other federal officials have characterized the shooting as a defensive action, claiming the woman was attempting to run over agents.
However, this account has been challenged by witnesses, video evidence, and statements from Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who suggested Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old American and mother of three, was attempting to flee rather than attack officers.
Multiple videos of the incident circulated rapidly on social media. The footage appears to show that the officer who fired the fatal shots was not in the direct path of Good's vehicle when he opened fire.
One video shows Good's SUV stopped in the street with several unmarked federal vehicles visible nearby. Agents are heard approaching the vehicle and ordering Good to exit, with one agent reaching for the door handle as the car begins reversing. An unidentified officer then fired three shots at the vehicle as it moved forward with wheels turned to the right. The officer was positioned to the left of the vehicle when he discharged his weapon.
The SUV subsequently crashed into a white parked vehicle further down the street. It remains unclear whether Good had already succumbed to her injuries at the time of the collision.
