Police officers rescue fisherman stranded on frozen lake in Michigan
This is the dramatic moment police rescued a fisherman who was stranded on a frozen lake in Michigan.
The 63-year-old angler fell through thin ice and was found around 100 yards offshore, submerged up to his shoulders in freezing water while clinging to a fragile surface in Kalamazoo.
Police were alerted at around 11:40 am on Wednesday, prompting a technical rescue response to the 3700 block of Greenleaf Circle.
Unsafe ice conditions initially prevented responders from reaching the man. Members of the department's specialised Squad 6 later arrived wearing cold-water rescue gear, allowing them to safely enter the lake.
Evidence Officer (EO) Tech Aaron DeWaal secured a life preserver around the fisherman, while Sergeant Melinda Moore maintained communication from the shoreline.
Footage shows responders on the bank, helping pull both DeWaal and the fisherman back to safety.
Once on land, the patient was placed on a rescue stretcher and taken by ambulance to a local hospital. He was expected to make a full recovery.
Following the rescue, DeWaal visited the hospital, where the fisherman expressed his gratitude for the lifesaving efforts.
Police later reminded residents that ice conditions can change rapidly and urged extreme caution on frozen lakes.
