VARIOUS OF EXPLOSIONS AT TARGETED AREAS UNKNOWN LOCATION, UKRAINE - RELEASED ON JAN. 23, 2026 - RESTRICTION: USERS MUST CREDIT “RUSSIAN DEFENSE MINISTRY” HANDOUT, MUST NOT OBSCURE LOGO —EDITORIAL USE ONLY — Russia’s Defense Ministry reported on Friday, Jan. 23, that its forces carried out artillery strikes against Ukrainian military positions in the Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions.

According to the ministry, artillery units of the “East” group struck positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces located in forested areas near the settlement of Zaliznychne in the Zaporizhzhia region.

The ministry also said that 2A65 Msta-B howitzer crews from the “South” group destroyed an ammunition depot, temporary deployment sites, and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) control points near the settlement of Illyinovka in the Donetsk region.

Russia started its "special military operation" in Ukraine in February 2022 to "denazify" and "demilitarize" Ukraine.

According to its memorandum for the settlement of the conflict, Moscow has demanded a ban on Kyiv joining military alliances and withdrawal of Ukraine's troops from Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson, the regions it annexed after a referendum in September 2022, among others.

Ukraine has called the terms an "ultimatum" and has called for a ceasefire as a prerequisite for meaningful talks.
