The term African Big 5 was realized by early day big game hunters and refers to the most difficult and dangerous five animals to hunt of foot. In today’s world the African big five animals are the most popular and most wanted to see animals during a photographic safari. The Big 5 consists of the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Rhinoceros, Lion and Leopard. Witnessing any one of the Big 5 will truly remain embedded for years to come. This video shows the extremely rare occasion when a group of safari tourists encountered three of the Big 5 animals all in one sighting. We came across this unlikely sighting during a recent safari in the Kruger National Park. To the right of our vehicle was a big lone male lion, lying in the shade while curiously watching something ahead of him. Suddenly we realised that right in front of us was a small herd of elephant and buffalo, all moving past at the same time. This experience felt unreal and we could not believe that we were looking three of Africa’s Big 5 animals simultaneously. It was clear that one particular young elephant was not happy with the presence of the buffalo. The young elephant suddenly started to chase one of the buffaloes while trumpeting out loud in its attempt to show the buffalo who is the boss. Once the young elephant made his intentions clear, the elephants and buffalo slowly moved on towards a nearby watering hole. The most amazing part was that not once during this time did the elephants or buffalo notice the lion staring at them from a short distance right in the open under his shady tree. What a memorable sight!
