Members of the public helped Romanian firefighters move a car on Saturday night, fearing the tower from a blazing palace was about to fall on the vehicle.

A remarkable video showed at least ten people assisting firefighters to shift the estate car away from the walls of the Greek-Catholic Episcopal Palace in Oradea. The well-known building on Union Square had caught fire earlier in the evening.

According to an eyewitness, the tower did indeed fall minutes later on the spot where the vehicle had been parked.

More than 100 firefighters were called into action on Saturday night to put out the blaze.

It took firefighters three hours to extinguish the fire.

Officials said on Sunday that the total area burned was 1,300 square meters.

No-one was injured in the blaze.
