South African Police Minister, General Bheki Cele, on Monday reported back on the army's first month of deployment to crime hotspots in Cape Town, including the Cape Flats.

The Cape Flats is one of South Africa's most crime and gang ravaged areas.

Cele said crime levels in the Western Cape were stabilising amid the deployment.

However, the city has just seen its deadliest weekend since the army's deployment with 47 killed, according to official statistics.

The first soldiers hit the ground on the Cape Flats on Thursday 18 July, for a three-month deployment.

South African Police Minister, General Bheki Cele, held a press conference the temporary base camp in Tafelsig, to report back on the results of the army's first month of deployment of the Cape Flats.

On 11 July, the minister announced the deployment of the army onto the Cape Flats, under the jurisdiction of the South African Police Service. The first soldiers hit the ground on the Cape Flats on Thursday 18 July, for a three month deployment.

The Cape Flats is one of South Africa's most crime and gang ravaged areas. Over a recent weekend more than 50 people were killed, with there being numerous murders on the Cape Flats every weekend.

After the press conference the minister went on a community walkabout in the Mitchells Plain Town Centre.
