Mmusi Maimane, former leader of the Democratic Alliance, speaking at a Cape Town Press Club luncheon said South Africa needs electoral reform. South Africa has a proportional representation system in which members of parliament are not elected directly but appointed via a party list system.

Maimaine resigned as leader of the Democratic Alliance in October last year after former leader Helen Zille was elected as the head of the party’s federal council.

Herman Mashaba, then Mayor of Johannesburg, also resigned a few days after Maimaine, citing differences with Helen Zille.

Since then Maimane has launched a new movement called MOSA (Movement for One South Africa). The movement is founded on the principles of the Freedom Charter, and wants to focus on youth and future oriented leadership.
