On Thursday the 09 April 2020 the president of the Republic of south Africa, Cyril Rampahosa extended the covid 19 lockdown by 14 days. This after the initial lockdown was to end on the 16 April 2020. South Africa has seen a slow but gradual increase in infections since the first corona virus case was discovered in early March.

Despite the extension of the lock down and mass information campaigns there is an increase in non compliance, this according to Mayoral Committe member for Safety & Security in the City of Cape Town Alderman JP Smith. Smith added that currently all agencies are ticking boxes but a new approach is needed to affect the lock down
