Heavy rains on Thursday night (October 29) caused a huge landslide in the town of Nejapa located about 15 kilometers from the capital city San Salvador. Civil Protection confirmed the recovery of six bodies so far, but it is estimated that at least 35 people have been buried.

Civil Protection announced the declaration of a red alert in the municipality of Nejapa, particularly in the area of the Angelitos one and two villages and the area of the tragedy, in order to carry out the search, rescue, recovery, and humanitarian assistance tasks that are necessary.

A section of the highway that leads from Nejapa to the capital city was blocked by debris of mud, stones, and trees that were washed away by the running water.
