A group of firefighters rescued a cow today (November 21) from drowning in an open sewer canal in southern India.

Footage of the incident, which took place in West Ambattur in the state of Tamil Nadu, shows firefighters using ropes to haul the animal from the water.

After several attempts, they managed to get the cow onto dry land.

According to local reports, the animal is receiving treatment and is out of danger.

The incident took place at Thirunavukkarasar Street in Gnanamurthy Nagar in Chennai's West Ambattur.
A video witnessing the heroic feat of the firefighters team led by Ambattur Fire Station Leading Fire Man Shanmugam, using thick ropes to get the cow out of the drainage system.

The rescuers function the ropes as a pulley system to pull the heavy ungulate out of the canal while the cow shows signs of agitation. 
After a few attempts, the cow is rescued successfully.

The cow has been treated and its condition is being stated to be out of danger for now.
