Five men travelling in a lorry in southern India were rescued on Thursday (December 3) after their vehicle was caught in fast-flowing floodwaters.

Dramatic footage filmed in the Thiruvallur District of Tamil Nadu shows the men sitting on the roof of the lorry as water swirls all around them.

A rescue team aided by locals throws a rope to the stranded men who managed to tie it around the cab of the vehicle.

One by one they were then able to haul themselves through the deep water to dry land.

Cyclone Burevi has brought intense rains to most parts of Tamil Nadu, resulting in flooding across the state.

This incident happened in gummidipoondi Thiruvallur District in Tamilnadu. The footage shows five people sitting on top of the lorry as the rest of the vehicle is under water. Locals and the rescue team threw a rope exactly to the lorry. The rope was then tied to lorry and the rescue happened. The struck people was asked to hold the rope and reach shore safely. They were rescued one by one and were brought to safety with the help of the rescue team as they locals hold on to the rope. This entire drama was in the footage
