Incredible footage shows the moment two hikers were able to capture up-close footage of an avalanche after they successful sought refuge behind trees.

The footage was captured at the Granite Mountain Trail in Washington State on January 17.

Andrew Sas and Cody Fingerson were on the way back down after a hike when they heard a strange noise.

It was at this point that Andrew looked up and noticed a large avalanche coming down the mountain.

After yelling "avalanche" to his partner Cody they turned around and ran into the tree line that was behind them.

The avalanche lasted around two minutes, after which the pair stepped out to assess the situation and navigate across the 20-foot chute carved in the snow.

Speaking about the encounter Andrew said: “We were hiking on the Granite Mountain Trail in North Bend Washington.

"This video was taken on the way back down the mountain when we had to cross an avalanche chute.

"Just as we began to cross the chute we heard a strange noise.

"I looked up and noticed a large wave of snow coming down the mountain.

"I turned to Cody and yelled 'avalanche!' [and] we both turned around and ran back into the tree line that was just behind us.

"The Avalanche came down the hill and wiped the trail out.

"The trees protected us; it lasted around two minutes and carved out a large 12-foot by 20-foot half-pipe shape in the snow.

"When the Avalanche ended we were able to navigate across this and join back up with the trail on the others ideas of the chute.”
