Kulum village in Ladakh faces water scarcity forcing the villager to migrate to other places. The village Kulum with eleven household had no glacier unlike rest of Ladakh region but they had been depending on snow and rainfall water for farming activities however over the past few years there had been not much of snowfall in winter as well as rainfall in summer thus the village faces acute shortage of water. So leaving their ancestral farming activities seven families of the village already shifted to nearby village Upshi in search of labour job and now the village is left with only four families. The abandoned and ruined houses in the village tell the pathetic story of Kulum village.
Artificial glacier in the form of Ice Stupas is a ray of hope for the Kullum village to solve the water crisis especially during sowing season in spring. There is small spring water ahead of their village which is used for making artificial glaciers. The villagers with the help of Himalayan Institute of Alternatives Ladakh (HIAL) built three giant artificial glaciers above the village which expected to solve the water crisis during upcoming spring season. Artificial Ice-Stupa a marvel in today’s innovative world, created to conserve winter waste water as an alternate to counter the water scarcity during spring. Using pipes the spring water is made to sprinkle from certain height on the cone like structure. As the water start freezing on the cone and they keep on spraying more water to it to increase its height resulting in forming huge artificial glaciers. During spring time the artificial glaciers melts slowly and melts water used for farming activity.
Innovator Sonam Wangchuk who has been awarded the Rolex awards for his innovations for building artificial glacier in the form of Ice Stupa across Ladakh extended his support to the villager to built three Ice Stupas above their village. The villagers have high hope on these artificial glaciers
