Landslide forces closure of national highway in Jammu and Kashmir

A landslide forced a highway to close for two days in the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir on April 2.

Large boulders rolled down a mountainside covering the Udhampur city highway following rain the region. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both the sides of the highway at Udhampur and Qazigund.

Several backhoes from contractor companies of the National Highway Authority of India were later sent to the site to clear the roadway. It was re-opened on April 4 to construction vehicles but drivers were advised to avoid the route.

Jammu and Kashmir was governed by India from 1954 to 2019. However, the region has been the subject of a territorial dispute between India, Pakistan and China.
