Heavy rainfall caused a massive chunk of a hillside to sheer off and smash into a road below in northern India on January 7.

The incident took place near the Ban Toll Plaza on the Jammu-Srinagar Highway.

A security camera captured the dramatic moment as hundreds of tonnes of rocks and earth slammed into the ground, metres from passing cars.

Heavy rainfall caused a large chunk of a hill to subside in northern India's Jammu and Kashmir on January 7.

The incident took place near the Ban Toll Plaza on the Jammu-Srinagar Highway.

Visuals feature an entire section of a hill falling to the ground within seconds. Following this, as the debris settles down, clouds of dust engulf the region. Meanwhile, panic ensues among the onlookers.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), the intensity of snowfall and rainfall in some parts of Jammu and Kashmir are likely to increase on January 7 and 8.
