A man was rescued recently after getting his head stuck in an escalator in the Indonesian capital.

Footage captured by Teddy Yap on December 23 at Mangga Dua Mall in central Jakarta showed a group of the man's friends working desperately to pull his head out from between the escalator handrail and a wall.

After several tense moments, they suddenly free his head and he stands up.

The man was later identified as Rizki, a kiosk owner at the mall.

He was taken to hospital with minor injuries to his face and shoulder.

According to both Yap and staff at the mall, Rizki stuck his head beyond the handrail as the escalator was going up causing it to get jammed against the wall.

An alert security guard promptly switched off the escalator, preventing much more serious injuries or death.

In footage filmed by Teddy Yap on Thursday, December 23 at Mangga Dua Mall, Central Jakarta, friends and mall visitors can be seen gathering on an escalator that stops to help a man in a gray jacket whose head is stuck.

According to filmer Teddy Yap, the man was stunned when using the escalator.

"He was dumbfounded when using the escalator. He allegedly poked his head out when he saw the Christmas sale crowd on the first floor," Yap said.

Meanwhile, Mangga Dua Mall Area Promotions Coordinator, Jessica Melissa, in an official release sent to the media, stated the chronology of the incident.

The man is identified as Rizki, a kiosk keeper at the mall. At the time of the incident, he was riding an escalator from the first floor to the second floor.

"The victim was known to be looking down while using the escalator with his friend. He stuck his head out of the escalator handrail, so that he unwittingly caught his head between the escalator handle and the parapet while the machine was moving," Jessica Melissa said in a written statement.

The mall security guard came to turn off the machine so it would stop and not make things worse.

Moments later, the victim was rescued after being helped by friends and mall visitors to remove his trapped head.

The victim suffered minor injuries to his face and shoulder and was taken to a clinic for emergency treatment.
