Hundreds of residents were evacuated from Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, after the city was submerged by 5-foot-deep floodwaters.

Footage from February 1 shows debris floating atop the floodwater that has entered dozens of houses in the area.

One resident named Peri Peto said: "The torrential water suddenly came and flooded the houses. Poor drainage and no solution from the government to deal with flooding makes us flooded every time it rains heavily in the upstream areas."

Bukittinggi city social service officer, Hermon Hasan Basri, said there were three to four flood locations and hundreds of people fled to patrol posts, youth centres and places of worship.

“We will drop food aid and blankets. The main needs are given to babies, children and women,” Basri said.
