Roads were empty as powerful Typhoon Hinnamnor lashed South Korea with torrential rains today.

Footage shows strong bursts of wind and rain hammering down on an intersection in Ulsan Metropolitan City in the country's southeast on Tuesday morning September 6.

The Korea Meteorological Administration said Hinnamnor touched down near Geoje City at 4:50 am local time, with reports describing it as the 'most powerful' storm to hit South Korea in years.

Its effects were felt across swathes in the country's south on Monday night, unleashing heavy rain and winds of up to 155 km/h.

Thousands of people were evacuated and 66,000 households in South Korea were left without power after Typhoon Hinnamnor swept across the south of the country.

Warnings have been issued across the southern cities, including Gwangju, Busan, Daegu and Ulsan and Jeju Island as the country braces for torrential rains and winds before Hinnamnor moves towards eastern China later in the week.
