This is the skin-crawling moment thousands of flying insects swarmed around a road in Thailand as the rainy season approached.

Video shows the army of flying termites, known locally as "Mang Mao" or "drunken insects", gathering around the bright street lights and car headlights in Sukhothai province on May 1.

They usually take flight to breed during the country's wet season from May to October.

Despite being a nuisance to homeowners and drivers, the insects are also eaten as a local delicacy, with villagers catching and roasting them to eat as appetisers.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are approaching their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
