Two firefighters dead as rescue truck overwhelmed by raging floodwaters in China
Two firefighters were dead as a rescue truck was overwhelmed by the raging floodwaters brought by typhoon Haikui in southern China.
The aftermath video was filmed in the city of Fuzhou in Fujian Province on September 6.
Impacted by the ravages of Typhoon Haikui, several areas in Fuzhou city have been hit by heavy rainfall. Some regions reported a staggering 24-hour rainfall of over 300 millimetres, categorising the downpour as extraordinarily heavy.
In the early hours of September 5, emergency calls were made by trapped civilians in the region. Responding immediately, the fire and rescue brigade of Yongtai County in Fuzhou City dispatched a team to the affected area. But nature had a grim twist in store for them.
En route to the rescue site, they were ambushed by a sudden flash flood. Tragically, the rising waters engulfed their firetruck, taking with it nine rescue personnel, which included eight dedicated firefighters and one local police officer.
As of 5:00 pm on the same day, eight of the firefighters from the ill-fated Yongtai rescue truck were located. While six of them were found to be stable, the remaining two, despite best efforts to save them, tragically lost their lives to the floodwaters.
