Hundreds of families have been evacuated as severe floods hit Cambodia this week.

Heavy rain has been lashing Battambang province since October 2, causing muddy flash floods that have submerged roads and homes in two villages.

Soldiers have been dispatched to evacuate residents, with some forced to take shelter on their roofs as the deluge engulfed their houses.

Local media reported that the waters had receded slightly by October 3, but many parts of the province remained flooded due to the heavy rain.

Song Sopheak, Governor of Phnom Proek District, said around 655 people had been moved to evacuation centres on higher ground.

Cambodia and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
