South African anti-apartheid cleric Dr Allan Boesak called for the South African government to expel the Israeli ambassador and to close the South African embassy in Israel.

Boesak was part of a group of protesters who forced their way through a police barricade to get closer to the City Hall where the South African Parliament was sitting.

Chief Mandla Mandela, the grandson of Nelson Mandela, called on Arab nations to support Palestinians in Gaza.

Both Boesak and Mandela were part of a picket which was organised to pressure the South African government to expel the Israeli ambassador.

A group of protesters broke away from the picket and marched toward a police barricade chanting "free Palestine' whilst carrying white cloths, mimicking the shrouds used on dead bodies in Gaza.

Signs held up at the rally accused Israel of racism but Israeli officials have accused pro-Palestinian rallies around the world of being rooted in anti-semitism.
