Thousands stranded at railway station due to severe snow and ice during Chinese New Year rush
Thousands stranded at railway station due to severe snow and ice during Chinese New Year rush.
Video filmed in the city of Wuhan in Hubei Province on February 4, shows the train station being filled with numerous stranded passengers.
Travelers faced delays of 6 hours or more, leading to a massive buildup of passengers at the station, creating scenes of chaos and overcrowding rarely seen.
The China Railway Wuhan Group Co., Ltd. shed light on the dire situation on the same day, revealing that freezing rain and heavy snowfall across all regions within its jurisdiction had wreaked havoc on the railway operations.
Ice accumulation on the contact network led to poor electrical conductivity, switches froze making them difficult to operate, and tracks buried under snow forced trains to reduce speed significantly.
The slow-moving trains resulted in a drastic decrease in the utilisation of train sets and a substantial reduction in the number of trains in service. In response, railway authorities had to suspend the operation of some trains to ensure the safety of passengers during their journeys.
In a plea to the public, the Wuhan Railway Bureau highlighted the challenges of clearing snow only for it to quickly refreeze in the low temperatures, especially during freezing rain, which exacerbated the icing of switches.
