Thousands got stranded on a highway as severe weather gripped central China.

The drone footage filmed in Wuhan City in Hubei Province on February 5, shows vehicles getting stranded in lines on a snow-covered highway.

In the midst of relentless snowstorms and freezing rain, Hubei Province finds itself grappling with a transportation nightmare as numerous highways become gridlocked with stranded vehicles. As of 2:00 p.m. on February 5th, over 100 toll stations along various highways have implemented traffic control measures due to icy road conditions.

The congestion primarily affects nine major highways including the G0421 Xuchang–Guangzhou Expressway, G0422 Wuhan–Shenzhen Expressway, G42 Shanghai-Chengdu Expressway, and G55 Erenhot–Guangzhou Expressway.

Reports from the Hubei Provincial Department of Transportation indicate that approximately 180 kilometres of highways across the province are experiencing slow-moving traffic, involving around 4,000 vehicles, as a result of the freezing rain.

Efforts to alleviate the highway gridlock are gradually making headway. According to Peng Xuewen, Director of Flood Control and Drought Relief at the Hubei Provincial Emergency Management Department, as of the evening of February 5th, 180 kilometres of traffic congestion persist on nine highways across the province, affecting around 4,000 vehicles.

The situation, however, seems to be improving as joint efforts from multiple departments come into play. Of the 52 highways and 462 toll stations across the province, 296 toll stations were under traffic control during the peak period on February 4th. This number has since decreased by 201 toll stations, leaving only 95 toll stations still under control as of February 5th.

By 6:00 p.m. on February 6th, collaborative efforts from various agencies have borne fruit as the ice and snow have been cleared from the G42 Shanghai-Rongcheng-Wuhan-Jingzhou Expressway. Vehicles are now seen orderly moving through toll stations along the Wuhan-Jingzhou section of the G42, marking the resumption of traffic flow on the G42 Shanghai-Rongcheng, G45 Daqing-Guangzhou, and G50 Shanghai-Chongqing Expressways in Hubei Province.
