Fire Destroys Shanklin Derelict Building

Firefighters from Sandown, Ventnor, Newport, Ryde and Freshwater attended the incident in Shanklin that occurred around 22:30 on Saturday night (13/03/16).

Five fire appliances, the Bronto Skylift, and the Incident Command Unit were called to the scene on scene on Palmerston Road.

The two story building measuring 30x20m was well alight.

The High Street was closed between Steephill Road and Regent Street for the duration of the operation. Landguard Road was also closed with cordons in place.

Several surrounding properties were evacuated, and nearby buildings were checked over by firefighters to be sure fire had not spread.

Six breathing apparatus, four hose reels and three main jets were used douse and dampen down the fire.

Building control surveyors were called in to assess the state of the buildings involved.

British Red Cross were also on scene offering support to residents who have been affected by the blaze.

The fire was brought under control by the very early hours of Sunday morning.

Nobody is believed to have been injured in the fire.
