Pangolins are the most endangered creatures on the planet today. The are hunted for their meat and their scales for medicine, which have no medicinal value whatsoever. They are very important to their environments. Pangolins are indigenous to Palawan, in the Philippines.Balin was given to me by a villager who said it's mother was killed. I had no idea what it was...here they are called Balingtongs, in English, pangolins or scaly anteaters. This creature was the most gentle I have ever raised, and I learned it's importance after I observed it while it was with us. I had a lot of help from Tikki Hywood Trust in how to care for it..but he himself taught showed us how and where he wanted to eat within two days.Pangolins eat up to 70 million pesky ants and termites annually so they are nature's pest control. As I watched it dig into the rotten bark of fallen of trees it's claws would crumble it to pieces...the chips would fall onto seedlings below and mulch them. Months later I visited the same fallen log and saw that many seedlings which it had mulched while it ate thrived, while those unmulched were dried up or smaller.Often seeds from nearby plants would fall into the holes it dug for ants in the earth and I noticed that months later, those too had germinated.We do not know what else this elusive nocturnal creature does...but eating pests, mulching seedlings and planting seeds as it eats is plenty enough reason to keep them safe.
