Penzance Promenade destroyed by Hurricane Force Winds

Buy video

Last night's tempestuous high tide flooded homes and businesses along Penzance seafront, the thirty foot waves and hurricane force winds have also taken their toll on the town's promenade. Huge granite blocks weighing many tonnes have been ripped out of the structure and scattered along the beach. On top of the promenade more paving slabs have been lifted and thrown across the road - again. Council workers were out early clearing the road to keep traffic moving and inspecting the damage along the one mile stretch of coast between Newlyn and Penzance. Locals have been campaigning for years to have an offshore breakwater which would help prevent this sort of destruction. In Penzance harbour, a live-aboard boat was rippped open by wave action. Luckily the fisherman had moved his family ashore after the last storm. Joggers enjoy the fantastic sunrise in the aftermath of a hurricane. Don't forget, Cornwall remains open for business!
